Komboskinia are Orthodox prayer ropes. The Greek word "komvos"(knot) and "shiny" (rope), is an item used in the Greek Orthodox religion. Prayer ropes come in varieties of forms and sizes. Some have 33, 50, 100 or 300 knots, which help a person in Prayer by staying focused. Each knot which has 9 crosses symbolizes the 9 orders of angels. The 33 knots represent the years Jesus lived on this earth. When one prays they place their finger on each knot and say "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner". These Kombosninia are made on the island of Tinos, Greece. Tinos is well known for its religious significance and pilgrimage. The church of Panagia Evangelistria is visited by millions each year. All ropes are waxed for extra protection against water.
